Kannawidan Ylocos Festival 2015

Ilocos Sur is one of the provinces having the most festivities held and celebrated. One of these is the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival, a week-long festival showcasing the province’s culture and tradition. It was first initiated by the Former Governor and now the Vice Governor DV Savellano. On it’s 8th Year, Gov. Ryan Luis Singson had extended the said festival for almost a month to give chance for the towns and it’s two cities to showcase their very own products and more. Now that the festival is longer, that gives way for more activities than the previous years. But what could these be?

Highlighting the 8th Kannawidan are Spiritual Thanksgiving activities such as the Concelebrated Mass at the St. Paul Metropolitan Cathedral and the scenic procession of all Municipal Patrons around Vigan. Kinnammet, the traditional boodle fight and the magnificent dancing fountain together with the fireworks displays were first witnessed during the opening of the festival. Other fun activities include the talent search called Siglat Ylocandia, the merriment of the DepEd Day, a fashion show giving prominence to old clothing styles/ fashion statement, the Kapuso Night, Bakbakan, recognition of the Gawad Titong Singson awardees and the Saniata ti Ubbing. Competitions will also be conducted such as the Sinniriban, Poem Writing Contest, Dance Craze, Siglat Eskwela Awards, OPAG and Livestock Pinaka Contest, Longganisa Eating Contest, Saniata and many others.

This year’s Kannawidan sure has loads of reasons why you need to go and have fun while learning. Let us not forget that this festival is not just about having fun but also learning why this is celebrated. What’s left for us Ilocanos is to preserve our culture and tradition, a challenge that we shouldn’t fail for the next generations to come. It’s SURE fun in ILOCOS SUR.
